CHAINSAW Ground based courses and assessments:-

Basic Chainsaw Maintenance & Cross Cutting only (Lantra Awards)
For anyone needing a chainsaw certificate who will not be felling trees. This course is assessed by the instructor during the training (ITA) and requires no separate assessment. (4 days)

Basic Maintenance and Cross Cutting only (City and Guilds/NPTC 201,202 – previously CS30)
For anyone needing an NPTC chainsaw certificate but will not be felling trees. Units 201 & 201 – (was CS30)

Felling to 380mm/15″ (City and Guilds/NPTC previously CS31)
For anyone who already has the NPTC “Basic Maintenance and Cross Cutting only” and now needs the NPTC felling unit. Unit 203 – (was CS31)

Basic Maintenance, Cross Cutting & Felling to 200mm/8″ diameter at felling height (Lantra Awards)
First step for new users or those not previously certificated. This unit combines both the previous “Maintenance & Cross-Cutting only” with “Felling to 200mm / 8” in one 4 day course. This course is assessed by the instructor during the training (ITA) and requires no separate assessment) This is a good alternative for anyone who will never fell a tree over 200mm / 8” and will never be asked for the NPTC certificate.

Basic Maintenance, Cross Cutting & Felling to 380mm/15″ diameter at felling height (City and Guilds/NPTC Previously CS30/31)
First step for new users or those not previously certificated. This unit combines both the previous “Maintenance & Cross-Cutting only” and the “Felling to 380mm / 15” in one 5 day course. Units 201,201 & 203 – (was CS30 & CS31)

Basic Maintenance, Cross Cutting and Felling to 380mm (refresher only – no need to re-take assessments)
This gives a Lynher Training certificate of attendance as evidence of an update or refresher only. You must already have NPTC certification for these units under either the old or new systems (201,202 & 203 or CS30 & CS31)

CHAINSAW Ground based – Advanced Courses and Assessments:

Felling Trees over 380mm / 15 (City & Guilds NPTC previously CS32)
For those wanting to continue on to larger trees – unit 301 (was CS32 & CS33). You will need to have “Maintenance & Cross-Cutting and Felling to 380mm / 15” – units 201,202,203 or CS30 & CS31 and be fairly experienced.

Chainsaw felling – all sizes – refresher for experienced operators
This gives a Lynher Training certificate of attendance as evidence of an update or refresher only. You must already have NPTC certification for these units under either the old or new systems – 301 or CS32

Sever Uprooted Trees (City & Guilds NPTC previously CS34)
The new unit 302 includes both of the old units (CS34 & CS35) “Individual & Multiple Windblown Trees”. It is for those wanting to continue on to windblown trees. You must already have NPTC certification for the following units under either the old or new systems “Maintenance & Cross-Cutting and Felling to 380mm” (NPTC 201,202,202) and “Felling over 380mm” (NPTC 301) as well as being fairly experienced.

CHAINSAW Off-ground courses and assessments:-

Tree Climbing & Aerial Rescue (City & Guilds NPTC previously CS38) 
This is now 2 units “206 & 306” instead of the old unit CS38. This is a standalone unit for Aerial Support Staff or Tree Inspectors. There is no chainsaw use in this course but is the pre-requisite for all other aerial units.

Using a Chainsaw from a Rope & Harness (City & Guilds NPTC previously CS39)
A 2 day continuation course for unit 308 – (was CS39) which combines your knowledge from the basic chainsaw units 201, 202, 203 with the Aerial units 206 & 306, all of which must be completed before you can do this course.

Advanced Chainsaw – Aerial Tree Pruning (City & Guilds NPTC previously CS40)
This is unit 307 – (was CS40) this 2 day is a continuation of unit 308 (CS39) . This unit continues on to shaping of a tree according to different methods and tree species. You will need all the previous certificates as well as a reasonable amount of experience and background knowledge prior to undertaking this course.

Advanced Chainsaw – Aerial Rigging (City & Guilds NPTC previously CS41)
This is unit 309 – (was CS41) and is 3 days of rope & rigging with various techniques for sectional felling and lowering. This is an advanced course which will require you to have all the previous certificates as well as a reasonable amount of experience and background knowledge prior to undertaking this course.

Other units:-

Powered Pole Pruners (City & Guilds NPTC)
A new “ITA” unit which allows the instructor to assess you on the same day. Now called unit 205 and replaces the old CS48 unit.
